Just in time for the 2012 Olympics, to be held in the United Kingdom this Summer, Warner are releasing their 1981, four time Oscar winning movie – Chariots of Fire. The film, which was awarded the Oscar for best Movie, tells the true story of two British track athletes setting out to compete in the 1924 Paris Olympics. One is a Scottish missionary through his devotion, runs for God, the other is a determined Jewish student from Cambridge University who wants fame and the opportunity to escape from prejudice

Universal’s 100th Anniversary releases for Italy revealed.

The titles that will be released by Universal as digibooks in Italy, and hopefully in other parts of the world as well. have been revealed. Although the release dates remain unknown, the movies will consist of at least the following titles if not more:

La Mia Africa (Out of Africa) 1985
Per chi Suona La Campana (For Whom the Bell Tolls) 1943
La Stangata (The Sting) 1973
Schindler’s List 1993
La Mommia (The Mummy) 1932
ET 1982
El Squalo 1975
Gli Uccelli (The Birds) 1963

Extras are to be confirmed but are said to include a documentary about the re-mastering of the film.
Audio is provided in English & Italian with the older films – For whom the Bells Toll and the Mummy featuring English 2.0 DTS HD, the more recent films will include a 5.1 DTS HD track. Subs will be in English & Italian as a minimum, but other languages seem like a possibility.

Two titles already scheduled for early Italian release as digis are All’Ovest Niente Di Nuovo (All Quiet on the Western Front) & Il Buio Oltre La Siepe (To Kill a Mockingbird). Both were released on February 22nd

Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket on its way from Warner

After giving the digibook treatment to Kubrick’s “A Clockwork Orange” and Dr. Strangelove, Warner are continuing with another of the director’s masterpieces – “Full Metal Jacket”. The 1987 movie examines the effect of military strategy plus the actual warfare itself on the Marines during their time in Vietnam. The film begins by showing the recruits at boot camp under the control of the strict Gunnery Sergeant Hartman (Lee Ermey), and ends by focusing on a single recruit – “Joker” (Matthew Modine) as war correspondent covering the Tet offensive for the US Army Stars & Stripes newspaper.

Hellraiser III quickly follows on from number IV

Following news that the fourth version of the Hellraiser series of movies was to be released in Austria on March 9th, collectors were left wondering what had happened to Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth. Turns out they did not have to wonder for too long. It has now been announced for release on May 16th, again in very limited numbers, this time 2,000 copies each of the Black or White versions. The previous release had 999 copies for each of the 3 versions Black, White or Color.

Trio of Exclusive releases from Fnac in France

Three US movies are receiving the Fnac Exclusive Collection Edition treatment this coming June 20th. The titles are Les liaisons dangereuses (Dangerous Liaisons), Un tramway nommé Désir (A Streetcar named Desire) and Jeremiah Johnson. Deliverance for 40th Anniversary digibook release

Based on the novel by James Dicky, this 1972 movie tells the story of four office workers who decide to take a vacation, canoeing down river in the backwoods of America’s Deep South. Their dreams of a relaxing break away from the stress of the office are destroyed when nature, and the local rednecks take control of their situation.

The technical details of this release are still not known, including whether or not Warner will be remastering the disc or using the existing pressing. The disc is due for release on June 26th 2012.

Hellraiser 4 continues in Black, White or Color!

Following the release in limited numbers of Hellraiser movies I and II as mediabooks, Film number 4 is getting the same treatment. This time though, as well as the Black and White covers available on the earlier editions, a third full color cover is being made available. Each version will be limited to 999 copies, so will obviously be very collectable and much sought after. No sign yet of the third film, but this may possibly be due to a copyright issue. The release date for this version is March 9th 2012. The film has the full title in some territories of “Hellraiser IV Bloodline” and that is the one used on this Austrian release.

In the 22nd century, a scientist attempts to right the wrong his ancestor created: the puzzle box that opens the gates of Hell and unleashes Pinhead and his Cenobite legions. IMDB

Empire of the Sun 25th Anniversary June 19th

This 1987 co-production from Warner Bros. and Amblin entertainment is based on J. G. Ballard’s autobiographical novel and was filmed at the UK’s Elstree Studios as well as on location in China and Spain. Steven Spielberg directs this story of a young boy – James Graham (Christian Bale) , whose privileged upbringing is brought to a dramatic halt by the Japanese invasion of Shanghai on the 8th of December 1941. Separated from his family, he is eventually taken prisoner and sent to the Soo Chow confinement camp. Whilst suffering the hardships of the camp, Jim attempts to recreate his former life and to lift the spirits of his fellow
detainees.

The 36 page digibook includes Essays, Rare photos and Film Facts.
Extras include the 48 minutes Documentary “Warner at War” about the studio’s impact during wartime – Narrated by Steven Spielberg.

Warner gives Streetcar the digibook treatment

April sees the release by Warner of one of its cherished back catalog of titles, the Academy Award-winning 1951 classic “A Streetcar Named Desire”. The 1951 film dirtected by Elia Kazan stars Vivien Leigh as the disturbed Blanche DuBois and Marlon Brando as Stanley her brutish brother in law. Warner have been promoting the title as “stunningly restored and meticulously preserved.” This digibook edition celebrates the 60th Anniversary of the film’s first release” and is set to contain 40 pages of inside information about the movie. The package is due to see the light of day on April 10th 2012.

May release for Universal’s “Pillow Talk”

This Doris Day & Rock Hudson vehicle from 1958 is the latest in a number of special digibook releases being produced by Universal to celebrate their 100 years in film making. As with the other titles being released as digibooks, this is getting the full restoration treatment. The package is due for release on May 1st 2012.

The Oscar®-winning romantic comedy “Pillow Talk” recounts the story of what happens when snooty interior designer Jan Morrow (Day) has to share a telephone party line with laid back playboy Brad Allen (Hudson). They know nothing of each others existence until they happen to meet in person. Brad falls head over heels in love with Jan and resorts to impersonating a rich Texan in his attempts to charm her. The film includes timeless classic songs by Doris Day and marvellous performances from the supporting stars, Tony Randall and Thelma Ritter.
